Saturday - August 3 - San Diego to Monterey
The worst day of driving ever. We got a late start -- about 10 am. From San Diego through Los Angeles was like driving in the city for 5 hours bumper to bumper! AARGH!
We gave up on I-5 about 2:30 and (on advice from Uncle Wayne) switched over to the 101 along the coast. One small benefit was happening across the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank
The other advantage was a beautiful drive up the Pacific coast.
Tried to take a break at Grover Beach by visiting the local Goodwill store -- we arrived at 6:55 and the store closed at 7 pm. : (
This is the first night driving we had done since Waseca, MN on the first days of the trip. By Waseca we got to see a plethora of fireflies. Here we saw the mountains lit by the setting sun.
Dave wasn't too keen about driving the mountains in the night, but we had reservations in Monterey that we had to take advantage of.
I'm glad California has nicely marked highways with lines and reflectors.
We finally arrrived in Monterey about 10:30 at night! Twelve hours of driving is way too much.
Love to all - nitey-nite!
