Winnemucca, Donner Pass & Pizza Hut!

Monday - August 5 -- Monterey to Winnemucca, NV

Today was a big travel day on our way back home.  We decided to go the north route to help Joyce with her altitude sickness.  Uncle Wayne showed us a great way to skip past traffic in San Jose and San Francisco.  We made good time. Starting off, we saw this surreal sight as the clouds parted to reveal the mountains - Uncle Wayne called this "high fog" -- it looked like the mountains were a painted backdrop against the clouds.
It was only 56 degrees in the morning when we stopped for gas - by the time we got to Winnemucca, it was 95 degrees.

You never know what you will see along the way...beautiful mountain lakes or reservoirs.
Windmills...

Cherry, orange, citrus groves...

The California aquaduct bringing life-giving water to crops, farmers, and cities along the route...
About lunch time, we stopped by the church in Penryn, CA where Uncle Jim and Aunt Vicki and family ministered years ago. We had lunch at Subway - just down the road.
Joyce couldn't resist taking pictures of some oldies along the way.

Then there was Donner Pass. We hadn't seen our mascot Orv for awhile - so he got in on the fun. This picture was taken by a gal who volunteered to help us out - her step-mom was from Green Bay!
We also detoured to see amazingly beautiful Lake Tahoe
This "catamaran" was huge...
We also stopped by the church in Incline Village where Mr. & Mrs. Purdy attended when they created the marionettes we use in the Fox Folk Marionette Troupe. I tried contacting staff there, but no one replied.
Here are photos from the side windows of the high ceiling design in the church.
Here is the balcony - I am told that Mr. Purdy -- in his 70's figured out a way to use a weighted rope, a rope ladder, and a sack of light bulbs to change the high ceiling lights to save the church money.
Being a Wisconsinite, I couldn't resist taking photos of these snow blowers sheltering on a deck at the church.
Coincidentally, we happened to turn on an old rerun of Full House tonite - in it, Uncle Jessie says that he rode his motorcycle back from Lake Tahoe to San Francisco behind a cattle truck in winter and made it in four hours.  I can testify that there is no way that is going to happen in real life.  : )
Driving back through the mountains from Incline Village to I-80 was a little bit of white knuckle mountain driving. Twists and turns down from Rose Mountain and Telluride as sometimes as little as 20 mph. Glad to get back on the interstate.

We listed to book on DVD - Silas Marner by Georg Eliot.  Actually we started it on way back from Lake Tahoe and had to restart it because the mountain driving experience was so intense. Enjoyed this classic work and its symbolism.

In Nevada - surprised to run into salt flats.  Hope to see more tomorrow in Utah as we head to Salt Lake City.
We arrived in Winnemucca about 7:30 pm. Dinner tonite at Pizza Hut.
Love to all!
